Mozart Piano Trios
Daniel Barenboim

Buy Written in the same period as two of his greatest stage works, Le nozze di Figaro and Don Giovanni, Mozart's mature piano trios present a more intimate but no less inventive feast of musical delights, bound to inspire all newcomers to the composer's chamber works as much as his existing fans.

World-renowned pianist and conductor Daniel Barenboim is joined by outstanding young musicians Nikolaj Znaider (violin) and Kyril Zlotnikov (cello) in this two CD set recorded in September 2006 in Berlin. Also included on this recording is the famous "Kegelstatt" Trio performed with Felix Schwartz (viola), and Matthias Glander (clarinet). The nickname derives from the story that Mozart wrote this work while partaking in a game of skittles - 'Kegelstatt' means 'Skittle Alley'.  However, many scholars believe that such a cerebral and dense work could hardly have been the outcome of such a frivolous diversion.

Daniel Barenboim made this recording on his own "Rubinstein" piano. Legendary pianist Artur Rubinstein (1887-1982) was presented with the instrument by the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and it was inherited by Daniel Barenboim after his death. You can hear this early 1960s piano with its beautiful chamber music sound alongside a cello made specially for Jacqueline du Pré which Daniel Barenboim lent to Kyril Zlotnikov for this recording.
