One of the most exciting young string quartets around gives its interpretation of two of the most enduring and popular of Mozart's string quartets.
K465 is one of only two Mozart quartets with a slow introduction and it is this that gives rise to the Quartet's nickname. 'Dissonance' is a misleading description, however; the many dissonances are of a kind generally acceptable in the 1780s, but it is the way Mozart avoids establishing a clear tonality, along with the music's intense chromaticism, that creates, even today, a disturbing impression.
K499 or "Hoffmeister" came at a high point of Mozart's career, a few weeks after the brilliant premiere of Le nozze di Figaro. It is one of his most unclouded works, revelling in bright, clear textures but also containing many artful "concealed" details. |
